“National Ecology Day” Exclusive Tour

"Lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets". Since 2023, the country has designated August 15 as "National Ecology Day" to raise public awareness of ecological civilisation and environmental protection.

In response to this significant day, we are launching the Excursion in Country Park – "National Ecology Day" Exclusive Tour. Led by country park guides, participants will step into nature to appreciate Hong Kong's rich diversity of butterflies, amphibians, and reptiles. Through close observation and learning about the natural ecology, participants will gain a deeper appreciation of the importance of protecting wildlife and their habitats.

"National Ecology Day" Exclusive Tour will be held in August 2026, with two themes and two identical sessions for each theme. The enrolment period is from 12:00, 21 July 2026 to 23:59, 2 August 2026.

Application Guidelines：

  1. The enrolment period is from 12:00, 21 July 2026 to 23:59, 2 August 2026.
  2. Applicants can apply for more than one sessions. Each applicant can reserve up to two quotas for each session. Each email can only be registered once for each session.
  3. Participants aged below 18 should be accompanied by an adult.
  4. Participants should apply for activities base on their physical ability.
  5. If the number of applications exceeds the quota for each session, places will be allocated by balloting.
  6. Successful applicants will receive a confirmation email within five working days after the application deadline. Applicants who do not receive confirmation email will be placed on the waiting list.
  7. If quota is available, successful applicant on the waiting list will receive a notification email at least three days before the date of the activity.
  8. Unsuccessful applicants will not receive any email.
  9. Please treasure education resources. If you are unable to attend a confirmed tour, please contact us as soon as possible by email at nature@afcd.gov.hk.
  10. Participants who fail to attend the activity without a prior notice will affect their future applications.

 

Finding Butterflies

Details

Introduction:

Butterflies has to go through four stages—egg, larva, pupa, and adult—before breaking free from their chrysalis and taking flight. This life process is known as "complete metamorphosis" in biology. Would you like to learn more about butterflies and appreciate their graceful dance with your own eyes? Follow our country park guides to the Butterfly Paradise and Butterfly Garden at Shing Mun Country Park! If you are lucky, you might even encounter the Common Birdwing (Troides helena – Hong Kong's largest butterfly) and the White Dragontail (Lamproptera curius – the smallest swallowtail butterfly in Hong Kong)!

The Mysterious Nocturnal Animals

Introduction:

As summer night falls, and the daytime hustle and bustle fades into silence, another lively scene is about to begin. We invite you to bring a flashlight, slow down your pace, and follow our guides into the nighttime countryside, to discover those mysterious amphibians and reptiles that are active after dark—such as snakes, lizards, frogs, and toads. Although visibility is poor at night, if you prick up your ears and open your eyes wide, you will be able to spot these mysterious creatures!
